Google’s Tensor G4 SoC to have improved heat management and power efficiency
Google’s Tensor G4 SoC is coming later this year to power the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and possibly even the Pixel Fold 2. A new report out of Korea today supports an earlier rumor that says the G4 will be manufactured by Samsung’s foundry. It will use 4nm process.
Tensor G4 will apparently improve thermal management with improved performance and higher efficiency. So it looks like it will be a step up from the G3 in every possible way, which is certainly good news considering that the previous chipset didn’t win any awards for anything.
Interestingly, the Exynos 2400 featured in the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ this year could bring some more customers to Samsung’s foundry, as it’s been well received – at least for an Exynos. It could be that everyone had such low expectations for it that it surpassed them all, but in the end it doesn’t matter, just that Samsung’s foundry can now make some more money for it.
Several voices in the tech world, including Matters’ Mark Zuckerberg and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, seem to want to rely less on Taiwan’s TSMC to make chips, as TSMC currently has about 50% market share. Samsung certainly seems ready and willing to help with that.
