Apple promises software update to lower the iPhone 12’s radiation in France

A few days ago, France’s National Frequency Agency (ANFR) banned the sale of the iPhone 12 in the country as it was found that the device emits more electromagnetic waves than allowed under EU regulations. Its specific absorption rate (SAR) was above the legal limit.

The company issued an ultimatum to Apple, asking it to quickly fix the problem using “all available means” or recall all iPhone 12 units sold in France. Today, Apple responded, promising to issue a software update that would resolve the conflict.

It’s unclear exactly what the software update will do, but Apple is confident it will address the French company’s concerns and accommodate the testing methods used in France. Unlike other countries, France’s ANFR not only tests head and body SAR, but also SAR tests for limbs – like when you hold a phone in your hand. The iPhone 12 failed this organ test.

Officials in Belgium, Germany and Italy have asked Apple to issue the update across the EU, so that will likely happen. The French government said the iPhone 12 update will be retested quickly after its release and sales will resume immediately if it is found to be within legal SAR limits.
