Netflix co-CEO says it’s not worth launching an app for the Apple Vision Pro yet
Pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro began last week, and a few days ago analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple had sold 160,000 to 180,000 units. However, the proud new owners of Apple’s space computers won’t be using them to watch Netflix.
Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters was interviewed by Strategy & Vision Pro No Netflix App. In short, it’s not worth it – there aren’t enough potential customers who own a headset compared to the amount of effort it would take to port the streaming app to the platform.
That’s not to say the Apple Vision Pro won’t have a Netflix app — Peters certainly isn’t against it, but for now the company is waiting to see how the situation develops.
Netflix isn’t the first company to avoid launching a native app for Apple headsets, with YouTube and Spotify having no plans to create dedicated apps (you can, of course, use a web browser).
Cupertino’s own Apple TV+ streaming service is available on Vision Pro and it’s not just a virtual screen – the company has introduced a new format called “Apple Immersive Video” with 180° 3D footage and spatial audio at 8K resolution.
Netflix launched a VR app in 2015 and even produced a 360° video taped to its popular Stranger Things series (albeit posted on YouTube). There are plenty of other VR movies on Netflix that you can try. Not just Vision Pro.
